Every detail counts in a photoshoot.
Thanks for stopping by! I’m Simon John, and for over 40 years I’ve been turning moments into memories through my camera. Whether it’s a portrait, a once in a lifetime wedding or showcasing your brand through commercial imagery I approach every shoot with honesty, artistry and a genuine love for what I do. Choosing the best images from each shoot is key to highlighting the standouts. Capturing high quality images in all scenarios means the final output is always exceptional.

From assisting at a local portrait studio in Portsmouth as a teenager to running busy studios in Portsmouth and Fareham—photography has always been more than a job for me. It’s been my life’s work and passion. Along the way I’ve been lucky enough to win awards like UK Wedding Photographer of the Year (three times!) and a Fellowship with both the BIPP and MPA. But these days it’s just me, my camera and my garden studio, doing what I love more than ever.
What Is Professional Photo Editing?
Professional photo editing mainly means an experienced photographer uses leading tools to bring out the best parts of your image. For example, it may mean colour correction or white balance is changed, or even photoshopping dust or unwanted elements out of photos. Popular tools include Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
I always try to get the picture right in person so less editing is needed.
A great picture starts with the first step of preparing for the shoot. Capturing the perfect moment during the shoot is key to capturing the essence of the scene. I take the time to understand what you want to capture.
Every shoot is tailored to your unique style and vision. With decades of experience and top of the line equipment I make sure every shot is beautifully composed, lit and full of life. I find that some of the best photos happen unexpectedly.
A Personal Editing Process
I’ve always believed in quality over quantity. That’s why I limit myself to just 20 weddings and a similar number of portrait sessions each year. That means I can give each client my full attention, from the first conversation to the final export, ensuring images are prepared correctly for printed materials.
After Edits
I use industry leading editing tools like Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop to refine each image. From softening shadows to skin tones, colour enhancement and removing distractions in the background. I aim to enhance every image without losing its authenticity.
I use tools to highlight the areas that need enhancing. Powerful photo editing software allows me to enhance images effectively. Color toning is one of the creative enhancements I use to create the mood of the image. Adjusting brightness is key for initial adjustments to get the right light levels. Shooting in RAW means I can keep the original file and make thoughtful edits to bring out the best in each image. Avoiding a flat image by adjusting contrast is essential for visual appeal. Processing the images allows me to refine and enhance beyond what the camera captures.
Local adjustments help enhance specific areas for a more refined look. Knowing what to fix is key to correcting errors in the image. Editing is part of the photography process, enhancing images after they’ve been captured. Sharpening images makes them crisper and cleaner. Choosing the right editing software is important for photo management and editing. Precise adjustments matter for the outcome. Adjusting highlights helps recover detail in bright and dark areas. Making selective adjustments to specific areas improves certain parts of the image. Finishing touches like sharpening and noise reduction make the images look polished. A large amount of tonal range in the photo histogram is key to exposure levels. Enhancing midtone contrast gives the image punch.
The exposure slider is the foundation for adjusting brightness. Cropping and straightening removes distractions and focuses attention on the main subject. Minor adjustments fine tune the image after applying presets. Converting raw files to JPG is necessary for sharing. Keeping sharp focus is important for image clarity. Importing images is the first step for organizing and preparing them for editing. Adjusting contrast adds depth to the image. Improving composition by better framing the subject is key. The post editing phase is important for enhancing the original image. The raw file format has advantages over JPEG, capturing more information for editing. Understanding nondestructive editing is important for working with edited images.
